Anatomy of a Scandal by Sarah Vaughan Blog Review

SOON TO BE A NETFLIX SERIES

Instant International Bestseller

“A nuanced story line perfectly in tune with our #metoo times.”—People, Book of the Week

“One of the season’s most buzzed-about thrillers.”—Bookish

“A strong choice for book clubs. Former political correspondent Vaughan makes an impressive debut with this savvy, propulsive courtroom drama.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Vaughan offers gripping insight into a political scandal’s hidden machinations and the tension between justice and privilege…Absorbing, polished.”—Booklist (starred review)

“Skillfully interweaving the story of the unfolding scandal, Vaughan gradually reveals just how shockingly high the stakes are…Sinewy…engrossing, twist-filled.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Some people’s secrets are darker than others.

Sophie’s husband James is a loving father, a handsome man, a charismatic and successful public figure. And yet he stands accused of a terrible crime. Sophie is convinced he is innocent and desperate to protect her precious family from the lies that threaten to rip them apart.

Kate is the lawyer hired to prosecute the case: an experienced professional who knows that the law is all about winning the argument. And yet Kate seeks the truth at all times. She is certain James is guilty and is determined he will pay for his crimes.

Who is right about James? Sophie or Kate? And is either of them informed by anything more than instinct and personal experience? Despite her privileged upbringing, Sophie is well aware that her beautiful life is not inviolable. She has known it since she and James were first lovers, at Oxford, and she witnessed how easily pleasure could tip into tragedy.

Most people would prefer not to try to understand what passes between a man and a woman when they are alone: alone in bed, alone in an embrace, alone in an elevator… Or alone in the moonlit courtyard of an Oxford college, where a girl once stood before a boy, heart pounding with excitement, then fear. Sophie never understood why her tutorial partner Holly left Oxford so abruptly. What would she think, if she knew the truth?

Advance Praise
This is what readers so far have been saying:

‘Anatomy of a Scandal is a compelling and cautionary story about how we can never truly know someone else; how even after twelve years of marriage, a wife might not know everything about her husband. Brilliant, shocking, and gripping, once I started, I couldn't stop reading’ Claire Fuller, bestselling author of Our Endless Numbered Days

'Anatomy of a Scandal is that rare book that combines great writing, spot-on characterisation and a compulsive, page-turning narrative. I read it in one breathless day. Set against a fascinating backdrop of the Houses of Parliament, the Old Bailey and Oxford University, think House of Cards meets The Secret History. Meticulously researched, this is an outstanding read' Fiona Cummins, author of Rattle

'A whip-smart, grown-up thriller with a hugely relevant moral question at its core' Tammy Cohen, author of When She Was Bad

‘Anatomy of a Scandal has bestseller written all over it. If there is any justice, it will fly to the top. It’s a fascinating insight into our justice system, and the nuances of trust and loyalty and how we re-write our actions to suit ourselves. A top-notch courtroom drama that takes the reader behind the scenes and into the lives of everyone involved in a high-profile case. Anatomy of a Scandal is masterful in its execution, teasing the audience as skilfully as a barrister playing cat and mouse with a witness. It’s whip-smart, utterly thrilling and deeply satisfying’ Veronica Henry, author of The Forever House

‘Sarah Vaughan has achieved that rare alchemy; a strong plot combined with complex characters and brilliant writing. Anatomy of a Scandal is thrilling. I came away feeling that I had read something extraordinarily good’ Emma Curtis, author of One Little Mistake

‘The world has gone mad for this book. I’m so excited. What an outstanding premise’ Rosie Walsh, author of Ghosted

‘Incredibly authentic, highly involving character drama here, in a story that could easily be ripped from the headlines. Sarah Vaughan delves into a world of privilege and power, showing one scandal and criminal prosecution from many angles with insightful and realistic storytelling. Emotionally resonant with often teeth gnashing inducing truths about the system, Anatomy of a Scandal is really quite incredibly addictive and will leave you with a lot to think about. Brilliant stuff. Full review at publication but very happy to be part of the early buzz here on social media - Really excellent writing, could just as easily be fact as fiction and I will have no trouble at all shoving it at everyone I know when it’s out there.’ Booklikes.com

‘The Good Wife meets The Affair – fantastic!’ @bleachhouselibrary

‘I enjoyed Anatomy of a Scandal immensely – a very elegant dissection of a very messy affair. Loved it’ Louise Candlish, author of The Swimming Pool

Anatomy of a ScandalAnatomy of a Scandal by Sarah Vaughan
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Anatomy of a Scandal revolves around a trial. A politician has been accused of rape by a woman who works under him. To make things more blurry, they had previously had an affair, and he's married with children. The book is written from the points of view of the politician, his wife and the prosecuting attorney. As the story goes, you learn more about each of their backstories and how they are connected. It's mostly an internal storyline. There's not much action. Your inside their heads, especially the women. The deeper you get, the more you choose to judge or sympathize with the way they feel and act. I've seen this listed as a thriller and suspense, but I would categorize it more as drama.

No one believes Ella can survive the Royals. Everyone is sure Reed will destroy them all.
They may be right.

---------------

Q: Are you trying to kill us?

No, but we love Ella so much and her adventures with the Royals that we needed to write this third book. You’ll see when you read it.

Q: Who’s in this book? And don’t say Ella!

Ella, the five Royal brothers, and a few more huge surprises.

REVIEW

Twisted Palace (The Royals, #3)

Twisted is a pretty good way to describe life for the characters in this series. The other two books were pretty dramatic like a soap opera. This installment is more like the daily life of a teen with something major hanging over everyone's heads and then a crazy finale.

TP is mostly Ella's story. For those who love the Royal men, like I do, you get glimpses of them of course. Through most of the storyline Ella is trying to find out who the killer is and handle having a father in the picture. There are romance, mystery, coming of age and revelation bits. Fans of the series should definitely see how it all ends.

Paper Princess by Erin Watt Review

“This generation’s Cruel Intentions.” Jennifer L. Armentrout, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author

From strip clubs and truck stops to southern coast mansions and prep schools, one girl tries to stay true to herself.

These Royals will ruin you…

Ella Harper is a survivor—a pragmatic optimist. She’s spent her whole life moving from town to town with her flighty mother, struggling to make ends meet and believing that someday she’ll climb out of the gutter. After her mother’s death, Ella is truly alone.

Until Callum Royal appears, plucking Ella out of poverty and tossing her into his posh mansion among his five sons who all hate her. Each Royal boy is more magnetic than the last, but none as captivating as Reed Royal, the boy who is determined to send her back to the slums she came from.

Reed doesn’t want her. He says she doesn’t belong with the Royals.

He might be right.

Wealth. Excess. Deception. It’s like nothing Ella has ever experienced, and if she’s going to survive her time in the Royal palace, she’ll need to learn to issue her own Royal decrees.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE BOOK

Q: Is this really a YA?

We recommend this for young adult readers, age 17 and up. We think it’s a book that will appeal to older teens and those adults who are in touch with their inner teen, like us.

Q: Is there a cliffhanger? I’ve heard there’s an awful cliffhanger! Why’d you write a cliffhanger?

We promise that we didn’t set out to write a cliffhanger, but Paper Princess does end in one. The good news is that the next book will be released July 25, 2016.

GET TO KNOW THE ROYAL MEN

Gideon: The eldest son. Loyal. Authoritative.  Gideon seems be torn between trying to escape the Royal curse and coming home frequently to save the people he loves.
Reed: Protective. Angry. Oh-so-angry. Reed, now being the oldest still at home, is the head of the Royal sons and his decrees carry weight in Astor Park Prep. He’s the most distrusting, but once you’ve earned his trust he will defend you to the end.
Easton: Charming. Playful. Unpredictable. Easton is a super lovable wildcard. He knows he can get away with pretty much anything and won’t let up until he does. His only real problem is not realizing that everyone, even him, has to have limits
Sebastian and Sawyer: Mischievous. Sullen. Interchangeable. The youngest of the Royals and in so many ways the same boy in two shells – the problem is you can never tell them apart. Though just as damaged as the rest of the Royals, they still have some innocence of youth… or do they?
Callum: Corrigible. Shattered. King. He doesn’t realize until it is too late just how distanced his sons are from him. He’s trying hard to close the gap between the Royal men – but always manages to tear them apart. He aims to find redemption, if he could only find his way out of the bottle…

REVIEW

Paper Princess (The Royals, #1)

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Paper Princess is labeled as YA by many, but I would not consider it that. Even though most of the characters are under age, it does have mature content. There aren't a lot of sex scenes, but what is there is too descriptive for me to not put this book in the new adult category.

I was so swept up in the plot that time seriously got away from me. At one point, I figured it was my bedtime so I looked at the clock, and it was only a couple of hours until time for me to get up the next morning! So yeah, it's one of those books.

Ella has been through a lot of hardship and heartbreak in her young life. She is definitely a survivor. When she's offered what looks like a free ride (plenty of food, clothes, a wonderful house, etc.), she takes the opportunity to stop living hand to mouth. But a posh life with the Royals isn't exactly the fairytale one would expect.

The Royals. Whew! All the Royal men have issues. I have a love-hate relationship with them, and I'm so intrigued with them too. Most of the guys are still in high school, but they're sinfully delicious and dangerous already.

That ending! Grrrr!!!

TOXIC by Kim Karr Review

He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not...

"My body became a flame and he was the match that lit it. I was on fire."
New York Times bestselling author Kim Karr turns up the heat in a smoking hot, emotionally compelling new novel that takes you into the world of Manhattan’s elite.

In Toxic, Jeremy McQueen, a sexy, intense, sometimes brooding entrepreneur goes after what he wants—the woman he left behind years ago. Phoebe St. Claire, a put together, in control socialite-turned-CEO has been drifting through life searching for something she thought she'd never find again—the right man to share her future.

Our passion was boundless. Our lust untamed. And our desire endless. He was the only man who ever made me feel alive. Then, I betrayed him.
“He was crazy. I was crazy with him. I loved it. I loved him.”

When he reappeared, I didn’t question it. Trust rarely survives the wrecking ball, so when he let me in back in—I didn’t hesitate.

Maybe I should have.

What began as a bid to save my family business, turned into a second chance at love. It felt so romantic. Working together, side by side, with the man I loved. My dream come true.

Nothing is as good as it seems.

We had our issues, but then again, every couple does. It wasn’t jealousy, or our too-hot sex life that I should have been worried about.

It was his darkside.

"Love and lust, in equal, healthy doses—now that’s all that remains.”
I never saw the end coming, until it slammed me in the face. The question is—did he?

Was revenge his plan all along?

****

Sometimes you have to wonder if your life is too good to be true.
Is it real or just an illusion?
Does the man lying beside you really love you like he says he does?
If the answer is yes, you’re meant to live happily ever after.
If the answer is no, you’re living my life, and nothing will ever be the same.

What you do about it—that’s up to you.

Me, I’m in too deep and there’s no getting out.
"Through everything, all the heartache, the loneliness, the sadness and sorrow, the one thing I never regretted was meeting him."

I’ll take whatever I can get for as long as I can because I know when it’s over…

I’ll never find another man like him.

Ever!

Picture

I live in Florida with my husband and four kids. I've always had a love for reading books and writing. Being an English major in college, I wanted to teach at the college level but that was not to be. I went on to receive an MBA and became a project manager until quitting to raise my family. I currently work part-time with my husband and full-time embracing one of my biggest passions—writing.

I wear a lot of hats! Writer, book-lover, wife, soccer-mom, taxi driver, and the all around go-to person of the family. However, I always find time to read. One of my favorite family outings use to be taking my kids to the bookstore or the library. Today, my oldest child is in college and my twins are on their way, so they no longer go with me on these outings. And although I don't need to go to the actual store anymore because I have the greatest device ever invented—a Kindle, I still do. There's nothing like a paperback. So now my four year old and I make dates out of going to the bookstore--it's time I love and cherish.

I like to believe in soulmates, kindred spirits, true friends, and Happily-Ever-Afters. I love to drink champagne, listen to music, and hopes to always stay young at heart.

Connected was my debut novel and is currently available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble , iTunes and Kobo.

Torn is the sequel to Connected. It is available for purchase on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iTunes, and Kobo.

To see the remaining books in the series, check out my Goodreads page.

I have also released a new stand-alone, THE 27 CLUB and another to release in July, TOXIC.

I hope you enjoy reading these books as much as I enjoyed writing them.

REVIEW

Toxic

I feel like I should warn potential readers that the relationship in this book is exactly what the title implies—Toxic. Go into it expecting toxic love, lots of ups and downs, breakups, jealousy, secrets, immaturity, etc. The characters will definitely work over your patience. So if you like lots of angst, drama and such this may be exactly the read for you.

This is a second chance at love tale, but it's also full of lies and betrayals. The reader has to figure out who's really trying to do what. Who is in love? Who is scheming? Is a HEA possible for anyone, much less everyone?

High society events, old money, scandals, corporate take overs, insider trading arrests and more make up the storyline. It also has the kind of love or lust that is so strong it makes people go to insane and dangerous lengths.

The best part of the book for me was figuring out who is behind what. The plot flips a few times with clues pointing toward innocence or guilt. I also liked the conversations and exchanges between all of the friends.
