Stealing Innocents by Cari Waites (Lisa Henry) Blog Tour Review

About Stealing Innocents

Those who dare to scratch the surface of ordinary, everyday life may be horrified to find a sick underbelly beneath—a nightmare world populated by villains and victims, predators and prey, where the rules of society no longer apply.

Where you’ll find people like Danny, the boy who sells himself to pay for his father’s gambling debts and ends up in a situation more twisted than he ever imagined. Or Troy, the cop whose obsession with saving a brutalized human trafficking victim turns deadly. Or Drew, the mental patient who begins to suspect his nightly delusions of abuse by his doctor are actually real. Or David, the cuckolded husband who decides the best way to get revenge is to seduce his wife’s barely legal son.

Stealing Innocents is an exploration of our darkest human impulses, where sex is power, love is horror, and there’s no such thing as a happy ending.

This collection contains three edited second editions stories that were previously individually published, plus one all-new story, by Lisa Henry writing as Cari Waites.

About Lisa Henry

Lisa likes to tell stories, mostly with hot guys and happily ever afters.

Lisa lives in tropical North Queensland, Australia. She doesn’t know why, because she hates the heat, but she suspects she’s too lazy to move. She spends half her time slaving away as a government minion, and the other half plotting her escape.

She attended university at sixteen, not because she was a child prodigy or anything, but because of a mix-up between international school systems early in life. She studied History and English, neither of them very thoroughly.

She shares her house with too many cats, a green tree frog that swims in the toilet, and as many possums as can break in every night. This is not how she imagined life as a grown-up.

Cari Waites is her much darker alter ego.

REVIEW

Stealing Innocents

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

HOLY. FUCKING. SHIT.
After reading I had to have a moment to recover.

Stealing Innocents is a group of short stories with varying degrees of darkness, from erotic dubcon to horrific non-con. Even the lightest is not for casual kink reader. None would traditionally be categorized as HEA's.

Gamble Everything
I loved Gamble Everything. It's heavy on the kinks (daddy fetish, orgasm denial, cages, plugs, fisting, sounding) and falls under dubious consent. The reader experiences the process and transformation with Danny. It's an easy story to get swept up in. Control is one-sided for sure, but there is mutual pleasure occurring. For me, the ending could be considered fairly happy even though it isn't perfect.

Crazy
Whew! Crazy really messes with your mind. Drew is in a mental hospital. He thinks his doctor is making him do sexual acts, but his head is so messed up that he has no idea what's real. I wanted this story to continue when it ended. It has me all twisted.

First and Only
I had no idea where First and Only was headed. I would have never guessed. It's fairly light compared to some of the others with it's own little extras like coaxing makeup and lingerie dress up. The storyline flips quickly, and I'm not actually sure how sad or happy I am about the ending really.

Falling Angels
Inhale...exhale... I'm still torn up over Falling Angels. It gutted me, ripped my heart out. It's darker than all the others combined and multiplied. It deals with boys forced into the sex industry. It's heavy on rape, torture, mutilation and just OMFGness repeatedly. I was not turned on in the least, and I had teary eyes some. This one is a tragedy that kept me up at night. I don't think I'll ever forget it.

Lisa Henry has succeeded in turning me on, turning me off, emotionally working me over and totally mindfucking me. Thank you ma'am.

Lies And Truth ( book 1) by Elaine May

Lies And Truth (Book 1)
by
Elaine May

When Isla Holmes life as a child is turned upside down and she is ripped away from her soul mate she is forced to live a life with evil.
When Isla and her soul mate cross paths will they find a happy ever after or will evil intervene?

Elaine May is an American film director, screenwriter and actress. She achieved her greatest fame in the 1950s from her improvisational comedy routines in partnership with Mike Nichols.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This story has dark elements and a mysterious feel to it. The beginning has a series of flashbacks in a dream sequence showing the reader clues of the past and planting the seeds for what comes ahead. Also, the story goes straight into her being sexually abused. She has basically been living the life of a tortured sex slave for several years.

For me, the storyline did not really draw my interest until a 3rd of the way in. Despite her treatment, Isla has been brainwashed by the ones controlling her to see things a certain way. These things start to unravel. Clues are continuously coming to surface.

I don't know if it was me or the story, but I did not feel as connected to Isla's character as I would like to have. I also felt the love interest was missing something. The biggest emotional connection I had was how much I hated the bad guys—A Lot. I do think the story got steadily better as it went along. This isn't a single so all the answers haven't been given yet. The mystery part is excellent because I still cannot understand what the play the bad guys are trying to run is.

EXCERPT

~Ice~
Parking my bike on the edge of the road, I hop off with Hammer and Coal following suit. They don’t bother asking questions, because my reason for coming here is obvious as we make our way into a house full of drunken teens.
Walking inside like I own the place, I see kids in every corner, making out. The sight makes my blood boil. If I find some little dipshit with his hands all over my baby girl, it is going to take both Hammer and Coal to keep me from beating the shit out of him. I don’t care if they are teenagers; no little prick is good enough to touch Brooke.
I glance into the formal dining room to my left, and someone has one very expensive table that seats eight, making a perfect set up for beer pong. Jesus, this is the nightmare of every parent. If I see one kid doing any drugs, my head is going to explode.
“Brooke,” I call out. “Brooklyn Rayne Grady, get your ass out here… Right. The. Fuck. Now!” I roar without a second thought.
All the teens stop and stare at me and my brothers filling up this ostentatious entryway. When nobody moves, Coal steps up to be right behind me on the left.
“Brooke, find her now,” Coal clips out, giving his cold glare to every teen in the room.
At the top of the stairway, I watch my daughter meet Coal’s gaze without one ounce of trepidation. Baby girl is showing balls of steel for her friends. Her short as sin shorts make my blood pressure shoot up even higher. The camisole tank top that I bought to go with pajamas is far from hiding her buds from all these teen pricks.
“Dad—” she starts as I interrupt.
“Don’t say another fucking word. Get your ass on my bike.”
“Death of you,” Hammer chuckles behind me as he turns around to get ready to leave.
Yes, my daughter will be the death of me. I watch as she grabs her friend by the wrist and half drags her down the stairs, mumbling at her the whole way down. When the two girls reach me, I don’t move.
“Come on, Dad,” Brooke lets out a huff. “Let’s go. This is embarrassing enough already.”
“Everybody here, you have twenty minutes to get this house cleaned the fuck up. Since you dumb shits have been drinking, a bus will be here to pick each one of you up and take you home. My man Coal here is gonna stay behind and make sure you do as I say.”
“Daaaad,” Brooke whines, “leave everyone alone.”
“Brooke, I suggest you shut your mouth and get your ass over to my bike. If your friend needs a ride, Hammer will take her. Outside. Now. You’re in enough trouble, don’t add more.”
Defeated, the two girls stomp off while Hammer shakes his head at me while I turn to follow them all out. I haven’t even made it to the door when I hear some pre-pubescent shithead slur out a question.
“Do you think they are, like, real biker dudes? Maybe we can ask them to pop a wheelie or something. Wait!” His voice cracks as he gets excited. “Maybe they’re from that show on TV! We should ask for their autographs!’
God save me from teenagers. No doubt, Hammer is cussing me out in his head for sticking one on his bitch seat.

Ice Playlist

Ice’s playlist is filled with hard rockin’ songs that we feel represent the rugged men of the Regulators Motorcycle Club. These guys may be rough and tumble, but deep down they’re the type of men that would fight to the death for their woman.

  Chelsea Camaron’s Songs

Evanescence - Lost In Paradise Thirty Seconds to Mars - Hurricane - This is the lifestyle of The Regulators MC (would you kill to save a life, would you kill to prove you are right are some of the lyrics). Don Omar, Tego Calderon - Bandoleros - Tied up in a world with the Cuban Mafia. Three Days Grace - Give Me A Reason Halestorm - Better Sorry than Safe Staind - Something to Remind You Three Days Grace - Home Three Days Grace - I Hate Everything About You - When Morgan first meets Ice he's an ass. The first few times they are around each other there isn't love shared between them.

  Jessie Lane’s Playlist

Otherwise - Darker Side of the Moon Hellyeah – Moth – How I see Ice’s slow burning infatuation with the innocent Morgan. Starset - My Demons Nonpoint - Breaking Skin Devour the Day – Respect - Ice isn’t the sort of man who would trust easily. You’d have to earn that sort of respect by showing him just what sort of person you are. A pushover would never be able to hold the position he holds in the Regulators MC. Demon Hunter - The Last One Alive – Ice has personal demons that follow him in the form of his dead wife. He’s a haunted man.

Chelsea Camaron
Chelsea Camaron was born and raised in Coastal North Carolina. She currently resides in Southern Louisiana with her husband and two children but her heart is always Carolina day dreaming. Chelsea grew up turning wrenches alongside her father, and from that grew her love for old muscle cars and Harley Davidson motorcycles, which just so happened to inspired her ‘Daddy’s Girls’ series. Her love for reading has sparked a new love for writing and she currently has a few more projects in the works. When she is not spending her days writing you can find her playing with her kids, attending car shows, going on motorcycle rides on the back of her husband’s Harley, snuggling down with her new favorite book or watching any movie that Vin Diesel might happen to be in. She hates being serious and is still a big kid at heart. She is a small town country girl enjoying life and, Chelsea hopes that her readers remember not to take life too seriously and to embrace your inner five year old, because five year olds know how to enjoy the simple things in life and how to always have fun.

REVIEW

ICE (Regulators MC, #1)

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I wasn't quite sure what to expect going in. I knew it was suppose to be a mix of bikers with something military. And that is exactly what it is.

The big story of the book is that girls are disappearing. There is a dark blight of kidnapping and sex slave trade taking place upon the city. Some parts dealing with this get a little dark, but not in the way readers usually think of dark. I hope this isn't a spoiler, but I have to mention it because I love it. The partial darkness I'm referencing is from the badies getting their just rewards. It's nice seeing this take on a popular story topic. So often in current books the sexual predator is romanticized, but that is definitely not the case here.

The love interest of the book is Morgan and Ice. I really liked both characters as themselves, but I wasn't so into them as a couple. Nothing was really wrong with them, but they just seemed so cliché. The virgin meets the bad boy. Sometimes I like that scenario, but their love scenes felt overdone and unoriginal to me.

What made me like Ice is that he is a single dad with a very active role in his daughter's life. He's a real take charge kind of guy and a total alpha male. A good father is such turn on (especially one who's as sexy as Ice).
In all my life, I have never analyzed a man's body enough to know they could be built in such a way, and now I realize I have been missing out. Backs built like Ice's are sort of beautiful and might just be my new favorite body part.

I believe that the next book will be Hammer's. He seemed to be really fun and wise so I would like to see more from him. But the character that totally stole the show for me is Coal. I can't wait to find out what his past is hiding. I'm calling dibs now.

REVIEW

Determined to Obey (The Dark Duet, #3.5)Determined to Obey by C.J. Roberts
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Although lighter than than most of the Dark Duet series, this book still deals with issues of slavery, but it goes about it from a different angel.

Kid reminds me of Caleb in that he's too pretty to be a boy. The difference is Caleb's hard life toughened him while Kid is still all soft and sweet. Really Kid is just looking for someone to love him. Celia and Felipe take him on as their boy toy. While forcing his boundaries, they also fill the missing holes in his life.
His world has become simple: obey or be punished. Kid decides simplicity offers its own peace.

Some of the scenes in previous books where we had the story from the perspective of Caleb and Levvie are shown from the POV of Kid, Celia and Felipe, but mostly the story is tale of the conditioning of Kid.

The way Felipe talks to Kid, the debasement of forcing him to refer to his ass as his pussy is hot in my opinion.
He fights back tears as Felipe compliments his 'shy, pink hole' and 'virgin pussy.'

And I never knew Celia was such a freak. :)

The dynamics of Felipe and Celia's relationship, the love that sprouts between the three and some about their backgrounds are also discussed. They really do complete each other.
Celia can be too brave.
Felipe can't tell her no.
And Kid is determined to obey.

I loved this book, but it was over too quickly. I want more of this series.
