The Revenger by Debra Anastasia Blog Tour Review

Summary

The real hero of this story is dead. You should have met him. He was a beautiful man. The love of my life. I didn’t deserve him.

Now what’s left are the jagged edges of the person I am without him, and what I have to do to get by. This isn’t even a story about love. Not really. It’s a twisted tale of revenge and hate—a happily never after.

The only man in my life now is the one I have to kill.
I’m Savvy Raine.
I used to be a wife.
I used to be a mother.
Now I am the Revenger.

Excerpt

There was very little chatter after the alarming phone call. Savvy looked at the clock. It was only five, but the extra help Tallow had enlisted acted like she was about to disintegrate. When they were finally done, they hung Savvy’s costume from a door, fully expecting her to drop trou in front of all the strangers.
She looked at the silver outfit meant to demean her and classify her as his, just like all his other favorites.
“Yeah, I’m not actually going to be wearing that.” She looked from one shocked person to the other.
Tallow recovered first. “But this is what he told you to wear!”
Savvy laughed hollowly. “Yeah, he can suck his own d*ck for all I care.”
The atmosphere changed. The others now realized Savvy didn’t think it was a huge honor to be a f*ckhole.
“That’s not acceptable. I’ll put you in it myself if I have to, but you’re leaving here in that outfit.” Tallow bravely gathered up the skirt and came into Savvy’s personal space. He obviously thought she was just a regular girl.
In an instant she’d lifted Tallow into the air by his neck. “I’m not wearing it.” She stared him down until he began to turn blue. Then she set him back on his feet.
Tallow was a quick learner and smoothed his fancy shirt. “Okay then, let me see what else we have.”

The Revenger

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Savvy was an average wife and mother until an accident changed her completely. The reader witnesses the aftermath and evolution from Savvy to The Revenger. I really got into it. I felt the pain and excitement. The author did an excellent job of making me empathize with everyone. Lines between good and bad become blurred. The plot is full of action, sweetness and sadness. There's never a dull moment.

I love that this author is able to change up and write different genres. Some label The Revenger as dark paranormal. I personally would not label this as dark. To me it seems like an old school superhero story, the kind where a hero is born from great suffering. If you like Marvel, DC and such, you should definitely check it out. If you're looking for something different, this is it.

Poughkeepsie Begins by Debra Anastasia #TopReads2015 Interview

Poughkeepsie Begins is one of my top reads for 2015. Author Debra Anastasia agreed to an interview. She answered all my questions (Blake, Cole & Beckett even stopped by for a bit!) and gave an excerpt for her upcoming PNR The Revenger!

It ends with the beginning. This legendary, indie, cult-favorite series ends its tale with the story of the Poughkeepsie brotherhood before the tattoo. Before the train station, before the church, before a criminal empire there was a foster home and three teen boys who chose each other as family, because the ones they were born into didn’t exist

Still in high school, Beckett is already laying the groundwork for a grander life ahead, one where his brothers want for nothing and get some respect for once. But even as he plans, Beckett must decide if he’s ready to make that choice—diving in to a life that trades his chance at a future, his chance at something as simple as first love with a girl named Candy Cox, for their chance to find happiness.

Blake, Beckett, and Cole’s devotion to each other is forged by fists and the driving need to belong somewhere, to do more than just survive this life. Readers of the series know they each get there in the end, but before we count smiles, we must first shed tears. These early days of the Poughkeepsie brotherhood will play on your heartstrings before serrating them with a knife; they’ll lift your soul with music, only to leave you with nothing but a desperate prayer for hope.

And when you reach the end of the beginning, you’ll be ready to start the series all over again.

INTERVIEW

You have an app for this series and lots of extras correct? Please explain some of what you available.
Yes! The Enhanced Poughkeepsie app is a beautiful reading experience that I hoped would take the reader on an adventure with videos, music and so much more. The information on how to get that in your life is here:http://www.debraanastasia.com/2015/11/free-world-class-poughkeepsie-app-on.html

What made you decide to write a prequel?

My readers told me that they wanted more of the boys. I really wanted to see what made their bond so strong, so I went back to the beginning.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
I think all of my books should hopefully be a fun way to pass time. Getting to share head space with a reader and play with their imagination is a tremendous honor.

Are you superstitious? If so, what are you most superstitious about?
No! I'm not superstitious at all. I once broke a mirror like ten times in a row as a teenager because a camper in my group (I was a CIT) broke her mirror and was despondent. So at like 13 I broke a mirror so many times in a row she was laughing by the time I was done. I told her, if you have bad luck I have it a lot worse.

Which emoji would best capture your essence?
The poop one. :(

If you needed one, what would your DJ name be?
H. B. Vagina. (Hairy Bushy)

What projects are you working on for 2016?
I have so much coming up in 2016 I should just sit down and drink wine I think. Next up for me is a dark paranormal about a female superhero, titled The Revenger. I have a middle grade with my daughter coming out this year, a true life Disney trip report series, an anthology and another romance.

Who are your cast picks?
I like Jesse Williams for Cole, Kellan Lutz for Beckett, Emma Stone for Livia, Olly Alexander for Blake, the blonde from Vampire Diaries for Eve and Kyle could be Chole (Girl in the 5th wave).

Excerpt

The Revenger
The screams led her to a terrace, and she busted through the glass doors to stand on a balcony. The ocean crashed against the shore below her, in motion and alive. From the roof she heard a helicopter’s blades pounding the air. She tilted her face to see it rise above the house. The man who made her daughter scream sat in the passenger seat looking right at her.
Right into her.
He was devastatingly handsome, and he offered her a bit of a smirk as he realized he would succeed in getting away. Behind her, she could hear the army level all types of weapons. She paid them no mind; she was trapped in the eyes of the evil man above her. He waved at her now as the helicopter began to rise. She pointed at him from where she stood. She mouthed her next words so only he would get her message.
“Run. Run far. I’ll find you. I’ll always find you.” She smiled as his triumphant demeanor fell like a leaf from a tree. In heartbeat he was gone from her sight.
She turned to face the angry mob. There was so much red she couldn’t even make out their faces.
She gave them the finger and did a perfect backflip off the fourth-story balcony.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

There are a lot of eyes in Debra Anastasia’s house in Maryland. First, her own creepy peepers are there, staring at her computer screen. She’s made two more sets of eyes with her body, and the kids they belong to are amazing. The poor husband is still looking at her after 17 years of marriage. At least he likes to laugh. Then the freaking dogs are looking at her—six eyeballs altogether, though the old dog is blind. And the cat watches her too, mostly while knocking stuff off the counter and doing that internal kitty laugh when Deb can’t catch the items fast enough.
Debra has a smattering of books in a few genres. There are two in the Seraphim Series and three in the Poughkeepsie Brotherhood Series with a prequel, Poughkeepsie Begins in the near future. Fire Down Below is the first in the comedic Gynzaule Series. The second, Fire in the Hole, will be published in late 2015. The Revenger, a dark paranormal romance will debut this summer. And last, a novella called Late Night with Andres is special because 100% of the proceeds go to breast cancer research. (So go get it right now, please!) Excerpt:

Beckett smiled as he walked into the locker room. The Westlake kids had picked their day well: there was a substitute PE teacher, currently handling an “injury” to one of the smaller Westlake kids, who was pretending to have a possible concussion. But by covering their tracks, they’d given Beckett his opportunity.
Blake entered the locker room after class, as they’d discussed. Cole showed up right behind Beckett, a bathroom pass in his hand. The attackers had followed Blake in, just a few feet behind, slapping lockers on their way. The Westlake kids were on the football team, and their testosterone was new and flooded their systems when they were in groups. Like now.
Blake walked past his locker and came to stand next to Beckett and Cole. The numbers were off, but if Beckett had money, he’d still bet it on his side of things.
“Oh, you think those two are gonna help?” one of the Westlakers taunted. “We don’t want your kind here. Fucking foster kids. Parents hate you so they dump you in here, and we have to deal with you in your hand-me-down clothes.”
“Shit, my parents probably pay the taxes that buy your goddamn food every night,” offered another.
The insults came fast and free.
Beckett was about to start, to intimidate them, threaten them, but Cole was quicker, and he kept his courage at the end of his fist. He jumped and hit the nearest kid with a punch that nailed the top of his skull.
Beckett watched the kid’s eyes roll up in his head.
“Shit.” Beckett came in hard. This wasn’t his first fight, and it wouldn’t be his last. Blake, who the Westlake guys had wrongly assumed was an easy mark, came back swinging as well. Beckett picked off the guys closet to him, but became distracted when he saw Blake falter. As a result, two of the meatheads got him in a restraint, a third landing a punch in his fucking rib.
Meanwhile, Cole wasn’t Cole anymore. There were no rules to how he fought, no line he wouldn’t cross. Like a bull with a laser focus, he got to the guys by Blake and took them down. Now standing, Blake came in with Cole, stopping Beckett’s assailant from getting in another shot. All the aggression, all the punches they were never allowed to return to Rick came to the surface now. This was a battlefield, and while the kids from Westlake had wanted to bully someone, Cole, Beckett, and Blake knew how to fight to survive.
Together they worked, and even with the crappy odds of three against ten, they dominated.
The substitute teacher ran into the locker room, hollering, “What’s going on? You shouldn’t be in here. You didn’t have to change.”
There were bodies and blood everywhere. No one spoke. The Westlake kids knew better. They all just waited the teacher out. Finally one of the smartasses piped up, “Didn’t want our clothes getting sweaty. We’ll get dressed. We’re cool.”
The other boys in the class peeked in the doorway. Obviously the show Mr. Fake Concussion had put on was over. When the teacher finally gave up and told them she’d meet them outside, the Westlake kids helped each other up. The ringleader walked over to Beckett, hand extended.
“Hey, we’re cool, dude. Right?”
Beckett took his hand and squeezed it tight, pulling the guy close, whispering just for him in his ear. “You want a serial killer? You fucking found one.”
He maintained eye contact until the guy finally looked away, wrenching his hand free. “You’re crazy. Jesus.”
Cole, Blake, and Beckett let the Westlake guys leave first, staying in the locker room until it emptied out.
“You think they’ll stay quiet?” Blake wondered.
Beckett nodded. “They will.” He didn’t tell his partners he was planning to visit the Westlake ringleader over the weekend at his home. Or that he’d found a starter pistol in Rick’s basement and painted the orange tip black. Beckett had every intention of threatening the guy until he crapped his pants and made sure his football friends never pulled this shit again. On his brothers. On anyone. He looked at Cole, then Blake.
Each of them had blood streaming down their forearms. The part of their arms that signaled a need for solace in the forest now dripped with violence.
Beckett held up his arm in an arm-wrestling stance. “Grab on.”
Blake complied, then looked to Cole. “You too.”
The three-way handshake brought them close together. Beckett was hopped up on adrenaline, but he knew this was real. He knew it deep.
“Brothers?” he asked.
“Brothers,” Blake responded, smiling.
“Forever,” Cole added solemnly.

Poughkeepsie Begins (Poughkeepsie Brotherhood, #0.5)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This story made me aww, swoon, cringe, cry and fall in love. I adore a tale about friendship/brotherhood even more than a romance (this has both). I also can't get enough when the characters are survivors of hell yet still possess good hearts. Poughkeepsie Begins has everything I want and need in a book.

Blake, Beckett and Cole come from terrible backgrounds. Many heartbreaking details are given. In a world trying to swallow them up, they find a safe harbor in each other.

Beckett is also at a crossroads in his life. He can try to hang his everything on the chance of first love, or he can follow a dark path into a world of big payouts and big consequences.

I highly recommend this read. The plot felt authentic, no eye rolling moments. I experienced the strength and pain soul deep. I also gave several smiles to Beckett's charm. It pulled all my heartstrings and left me wanting more. The storyline is beautiful, ugly, sad and uplifting all in one go.

Fire Down Below by Debra Anastasia #Giveaway and Review

Dove Glitch is embarrassed about everything above her knees and below her belly button. When she has to fill a delicate, embarrassing prescription the last thing she needs is a sexy-as-hell (and brand spanking new) pharmacist behind the counter.

Johnson Fitzwell’s first day of his dream career also happens to coincide with the exact moment Dove needs her feminine meds filled. His glorious voice is way too loud–as in, he should be counting down the hits with Ryan Seacrest kind of loud. Thanks to Johnson’s handsome face and gorgeous jaw line, Dove dives headlong into her waking nightmare and asks for a vagina-scented cream.

How could she not fall for him? Dove's only active goal now is to get Johnson to kiss her right on the lips. Either set. However, his horrible girlfriend is one of many obstacles preventing her from making that fantasy a reality. When Dove defends Johnson in the most unhygienic, unconventionally gross way in the middle of a crowded restaurant, their tender, slightly tantric relationship is off to a galloping, farting start.

Each print copy of this book will be dipped in holy water by my mom, and glared at by my father as he purses his lips. Neither will help. So, drop your pants and turn to the left and cough. I hope you're not allergic to latex, because it’s time to fill your prescription. Anally.

Oh God. We’re talking about me being naked, in the shower with cooter cream. Please world, end. Kill me.
“I know it’s not soap. I just… if it’s scented… I can’t do scented. Flowers and stuff like that. Fruit-flavored soaps make… things… burnish.” She could tell from the peeks at his face Mr. Fitzwell had never stepped foot in bath and lotion store, wanting to try the array of fun fragrances. Nor had he purchased Peppermint Candy shower gel, foamed up his nether regions, and felt like he had dipped them in lava. Dove crossed and uncrossed her legs at the memory.
Mr. Fitzwell seemed concerned. “Okay, just a heads-up. It’s definitely not good to put any fruits or plant life near your genitals.” He made a V with his hands and formed his own pretend vagina in front of his pants.
Dove covered her eyes and tried to defend herself because now she could hear the sickly older woman beating her supporters with a purse.
Dove’s mumbling got louder with her embarrassment. “I don’t put weird things down… there. Just make sure that the cream’s vagina-scented. Just plain. For vaginas.” She kept her eyes on the counter.

REVIEW

Fire Down Below (Gynazule #1)

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

So, I didn't really know anything specific about this going into it. Most of the comments that I read about it were basically WTF without actual details. Now, that I've read it, I'd say most readers are probably just stunned speechless by the time they finish. Fire Down Below is basically every gross body function and embarrassing situation known to man all gathered into one book. I had to take breaks while reading. Sometimes I felt gaggy, but mostly I was laughing so hard my stomach muscles needed a break.

First off, the entire cast are lovable, bumbling idiots. They're so vulgar and some are so shockingly shameless. It's sort of like a Dickhouse, Broken Lizard, Nation Lampoon mashup geared toward women.
"Sausage and boobs, fantastic. Go at it, ladies. I've got enough grease on my hands and chest to lube us all up."

The story centers around Dove Glitch and her friends. Most of the cast live in her apartment building. Every person in this book is a social reject. They can't take a step without tripping, or an anvil falling from the sky, or shit (as in feces) coming into the picture. Seriously, human body functions and issues are always popping up, as well as weird neighbors and random naked body parts.
"Hey, girl, I have a massive zit I need you to pop."
"Your dick's out again."
"It was air drying. You need to let a dick breathe. Underwear is jail."

Ha. Ha. Just reading that quote made me start chuckling again. Duke is off the chain. <3 Prepare yourself.  Gotta say, the big goof is awesome and my favorite character.

So, mostly it's teenage boy humor scene after scene, farts and giggles, but there is a bit of the sexy too. ;)
"Great. I gave you unwanted anal. That's what I get for reading all those sexual expertise books."

Actually, I didn't realize until a ways into the book that there is a deeper storyline sneaking it's way in. Matters of the heart do make an appearance. I'm not going to discuss it though so it can creep on you also.

I had the most fun reading this, and I definitely plan to read the next installment.

P.S. I love the Harry Potter references. :D

4+ letting it all hang out stars
