Sweetest Sorrow by J.M. Darhower Review

Dante Galante has evaded death a few times in his life, but held captive in a sweltering basement, he's certain that death has finally caught up to him. Bloody and barely breathing, he tries to stay strong, but there's only so much a man can endure before darkness takes over.

As a critical care nurse, Gabriella Russo witnesses suffering often. Thick-skinned, forever cautious, she doesn't take her work home with her... until Dante Galante lands himself in her hospital. Recklessly grieving the sister he believes he'll never see again, Dante needs a friend. Just a friend. That's all it's supposed to be.

But life has other plans for them, just as it had for Matteo Barsanti and Genevieve Galante. Away from the chaos, building a life of their own, there's only one thing that could ever bring them back to New York: Dante.

Rules get broken and boundaries are crossed as the fight between rival families continues on, drawing them all deeper into a war they want far away from... for good reason.

Book 1 of the Forbidden Series

A deadly rivalry.

Two families at war.

Nobody is safe, not even the innocent.

Especially the innocent.

Blood will be spilled.

Genevieve "Genna" Galante knows a thing or two about causing trouble. After all, it's engrained in her DNA. As the only daughter of Primo Galante, notorious boss of the Galante crime family, her life is dictated by a certain set of rules… rules Genna was never very good at following.

Matteo "Matty" Barsanti never wanted anything to do with the family business, but as the first-born Barsanti son, certain things are expected of him. It's his duty, according to his father, to help take down the enemy... even if that enemy means something to him.

A chance encounter on an elevator changes the course of lives, causing the biggest trouble of Genna's young life. The only good Barsanti is a dead Barsanti. She's heard it said time and time again. So what happens when she falls in love with one of them?

The story of star-crossed lovers caught in the middle of the biggest rivalry New York has ever seen, determined to make it… if only they can survive their parents' feud.

REVIEW

Sweetest Sorrow (Forbidden, #2)

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a dual couple story. Matteo Barsanti and Genevieve Galante from BAON are expecting a baby and on the run. Dante Galante has evaded death again, but he is in critical condition under the care of Gabriella Russo. Every character is completely intertwined. There's the big arch nemesis situation between Primo Galante and Bobby Barsanti, and practically everyone is a mortal enemy really. Despite everything, some are able to see past the war of the last couple of decades.

I was into the storyline from the start, but it wasn't fully holding my interest during the beginning part. The later half or so greatly picked up me. There were so many stand out lines that I actually was compelled to highlight and read over them a couple of extra times.

If you've read this author, you know she gives her mafia stories a realistic feel. They aren't over the top or guaranteed to end well for everyone. These characters have lived through and/or perpetrated acts which forever changed everything. No matter how things happened to go, there were bound to be bittersweet feelings.

Sweetest Sorrow was a win for me. I liked and felt sorry for certain characters unexpectedly. I was shocked by the complete heartlessness of others. A blast from the past person of obsession for me showed up. It felt like time travel to see someone you know you will miss in the future. The book ends in a way that could definitely be the conclusion of the story, but I wouldn't be surprised to see any of the cast pop up again. I want to give a shout out to Gavin Amaro. He is a favorite from this series for sure.

The first in an emotion-fueled, New Adult series from the #1 bestselling author of the Thoughtless novels!

Too fast, too furious—and way too hot to handle…

Mackenzie Cox has a lot to prove. Daughter of a racing legend, she is eager to show the world that she has inherited her father's talent in the male-dominated sport of professional motorcycle racing. The last thing Kenzie needs is to be antagonized by her rival team's newest rider, Hayden Hayes. Plucked from the world of illegal street racing, Hayden immediately gets under Kenzie's skin. His insinuations that Kenzie is a spoiled princess who was handed her career fuels her desire to win, and much to her surprise, Kenzie soon learns she performs better when she's racing against Hayden.

As Kenzie and Hayden push each other on the track, the electric energy between them off the track shifts into an intense—and strictly forbidden—attraction. The only rule between their two ultra-competitive teams is zero contact. Kenzie always does her best to play by the rules, but when her team slips into a financial crisis, she has no choice but to turn to Hayden for help. EXCERPT

“Do you have any idea who this guy is, and why the hell he’s on our track?”
Myles tilted his head as he thought. “Don’t know, but if he’s on the track before noon, your dad must have hired him. The Bennetis know not to break that rule. Not after what happened last time.”
The last time a Benneti stepped foot on our track before they were allowed to, that Benneti had found himself duct-taped to the flagpole in the middle of the track. Naked. Of course, the Benneti team had gotten us back by breaking all the windows in the garage doors. They were still boarded over, since we couldn’t afford to fix them yet. For the sake of our bank account, Dad had ordered every Cox racer not to continue the paybacks, no matter how warranted they were.
Ignoring Myles’s chuckle, I renewed my inspection of the racer. The new rider was fast, and ridiculously good—his setup on the corners was perfectly timed, and he kept his body low, hanging off the bike so that nothing was over the center line but his outside arm and leg; his “triangle of daylight”—the space between his inside knee and the bike—was so beautiful that Dad would probably photograph it and hang it on his office wall. Considering the furious competition at the professional level—races were won or lost by mere seconds—and considering how much time, energy, and resources were spent on training new riders, I wasn’t too surprised this guy was top-notch. With the upcoming racing season so close, any person Dad brought onto our team would be impressive. Dad wouldn’t settle for anything less than amazing; he couldn’t afford to. Yet another reason I was feeling a profound pressure to perform. There was no free ride for Jordan Cox’s daughter; I had to earn my place, same as everyone else.
When number 43 finally finished his set and slowed to exit the track, Myles let out a low whistle. “Not bad. He reminds me of you.” Frowning, I peeked up at him. His dark eyes sparkled with amusement. “No guts, no glory, balls-to-the-wall racing, like you have something to prove every time you go out there.” He raised a dark eyebrow at me, but I remained silent. Having to prove myself was a daily occurrence, and Myles knew that.
The rider exited the track at the same place where we were standing with our bikes. He slowed to a stop directly in front of us, shut off his motorcycle, and removed his helmet. My jaw dropped to my chest, and my eyes bugged out of my skull. No. It was not possible. But the long-dulled desires starting to tingle back to life at just the sight of him told me it was possible. The man who was proudly wearing the number 43 was the same drop-dead-gorgeous man who’d won the street race early this morning. What the hell was he doing here—on my turf—looking for all the world like he belonged?
In the bright sunshine, I could see that his eyes were actually a light shade of green. There was a devious glint in them that silently promised that every day with him would be even more intriguing than the last. Add that to his dirty-blond hair, rugged jawline, perfect bone structure, athletic build, and perfectly full lips that hinted at a treasure trove of untold pleasures, and you got a man who attracted a lot of attention everywhere he went—as I’d witnessed last night by the swarm of groupies surrounding him while he’d been illegally racing.
No way. There was no way Dad had hired this guy!
Hopping off his bike, the stranger ran a hand through his sweat-soaked hair. The shaggy strands were sticking up every which way now, and the chaotic hairstyle was too damn appealing. A small groan slipped from me in my shock. Get it together, Kenzie.
His emerald eyes swung my way, taking me in, and I held my breath and stood a little straighter. Did he recognize me like I recognized him? Did I want him to? Damn it . . . what was his name again? And why the hell did he have to have such incredible eyes? Green with flecks of gold, penetrating and intense, like when he was looking at you—truly looking at you—nothing else around him mattered. I could easily picture him studying the track with that unrelenting gaze. I could also picture him studying my curves with that superheated stare. Goddammit, no. This couldn’t seriously be happening.

Review

Furious Rush

Kenzie is a strong female character. She’s grown up and works in the male dominated field of motorcycle racing. Her father was a legend so she’s a legacy. Much of this story is her personal tale of trying to make it in the sport. She lives and breathes it.
Hayden and Kenzie’s story is almost a Romeo and Juliet situation. Add to that some illegal street racing and someone sabotaging drivers. This of course brings out the fighting of attraction, secrets, lies and the severing of relationships. All there are suspense and mystery elements. Things did not play out how I expected. If you’re looking for a book with an unpredictable ending, you should definitely check it out.

Daryl Banner is a writer and composer who graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in Theatre and Psychology.

He does not write in any single genre, as his stories tend to span several. He is most inspired by the smart and unlikely hero, but urges you (the reader) not to fall in love with them; they may deceive you with their innocence. He is thrilled by putting his characters in terrible situations where they must face choices and challenges that seem impossible to overcome.

Daryl Banner writes contemporary fiction, sci-fi/fantasy (both in medieval and futuristic senses), unique takes on the apocalypse and paranormal romance genre, as well as magic realism. He cannot wait to hear what you think about his stories and welcomes (and responds to!) all feedback.

Interesting tidbits: Daryl is also an obsessive piano player, video game enthusiast, and occasional actor. He's been remixing video game music for over fifteen years, and is a passionate Final Fantasy fan. You can feed your ears with many of his remixes (as well as his original music) on his YouTube page "www.youtube.com/DarylBanner". Also, he personally answers all emails he receives, so if you have some strange desire to write him, he may enjoy it. He currently resides in Texas.

Outlier: Legacy (Outlier, #2)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Outlier: Legacy is amazing! I would probably best categorize it as dystopian urban fantasy. I would place the major traditional themes as man vs. man, man vs. himself and man vs. society and the major updated themes as overcoming the monster, quest and tragedy. It deals in many areas including adventure, mystery, death, family, romance, friendship and more. Examples of many common life sayings can be seen such as you reap what you sew and the world isn't fair.

The setting is Atlas, the last city at some point in the future. People no longer sleep after toddler age, and everyone has a Legacy (sort of like a superpower). The range of the legacies goes from almost insignificant to practically godly. Most of the populace live in the slums. High society, including the king, lives in the Lifted City, which is actually located in the sky over the slums.

There are several characters of interest so the story changes between the points of view of each. This gives the reader a true perspective of what's going on all around Atlas. The actions each character takes or doesn't take affect them all. Everyone is connected (it's like Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon). The Lesser family is a major focal point (kind of like the Starks, with hopefully a lower death rate). I could never help but feel that everything centers on them, but they aren't the sole catalyst of the series. Many impressive and disturbing citizens rise and fall during this battle for survival and power. Everyone has their own agenda so it boils down to several basic questions for the reader. What lengths will someone go to protect their family, be with their lover or get revenge? What makes a villain? How far is too far to be justified? What/who is important? What are the Legacies?

I want to discuss so many details, but this is one of those types of books where almost anything is a spoiler. I can't express enough how much I loved Outlier: Legacy. Everyone should read it.
