DIRTY SOULS by Karina Halle Review

SUMMARY:

From New York Times bestselling author Karina Halle comes DIRTY SOULS the much-anticipated, nail-biting conclusion to Black Hearts…

Violet McQueen has always been a sensitive soul. Troubled and misunderstood, she never realized her place in the world, nor her true potential…until she met Vicente Bernal.

From birth, Vicente Bernal has always known his place in the world – he’s been groomed to be a ruthless king. Yet for a man whose soul has become morally bankrupt, it’s only through Violet he’s realizing the worth of someone’s heart.

But at what cost?

With a deadly game set in motion taking them from the stark deserts of California to the steamy jungles of Mexico, Violet and Vicente’s forbidden relationship will be put to the test. Boundaries will be pushed, lines will be crossed and souls will get very, very dirty.

Because how do you choose between blood and love when both might get you killed?

Review

Dirty Souls (Sins Duet, #2)

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Wow, what a ride. This book kept me on the edge. I actually felt like arguing with the characters. I was in that deeply.

This is the second book in a two part series. You have to read Black Hearts first. It picks up right where the other left off. Violet and Vicente are in their little love cocoon, but of course, it can't last. They have a whole world of danger waiting for them. The twists and turns just do not stop in this book. I didn't see so much coming. Eventually everyone ends up in Mexico. Javier has changed so much throughout all the books in the other series. I had no idea what he was capable of doing. Actually I didn't know what the limits were for any of the characters. I think I'm still a bit in shock of everything that went down. There is a conclusion of this storyline, but it's definitely open to more from the characters in this world.

THE HATE U GIVE by Angie Thomas Review

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.
Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil's name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.
But what Starr does or does not say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

REVIEW

The Hate U Give

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book is so relevant. It's told from a black girl's point of view, but it's for everyone. Starr is in the car with an unarmed boy who is shot and killed by a cop. The boy was faultless in the shooting. The officer has a preconceived belief of what kind of person he is. The story doesn't imply that all police officers are corrupt or all black Americans are innocent. The storyline shows good and bad people in her neighborhood, family, school and everywhere. Her uncle is a policeman. He's decent and moral. Her brother's father is a gangbanger who terrorizes the neighborhood. Her boyfriend is white and treats her great. One of her friends is white and turns out not to be a friend. Some of the characters are drug dealers and racists. Some are trying to help end the negative cycles. It's an honest look into situations that need attention. I didn't feel any hate coming through, but the struggles and love are evident. It moved me emotionally over and over. The storyline isn't a downer even though it deals with with tragedy and heavy matters. Fun and lighter moments are there too. The Hate U Give is a must read for teens and adults. It highlights important issues without compounding the negativity and definitely inspires change and empathy.

About SHADE’S LADY:

New York Times bestselling author Joanna Wylde returns to the world of the Reapers Motorcycle Club…

Looking back, none of this would’ve happened if I hadn’t dropped my phone in the toilet. I mean, I could’ve walked away from him if I’d had it with me.

Or maybe not.

Maybe it was all over the first time he saw me, and he would’ve found another way. Probably—if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that Shade always gets what he wants, and apparently he wanted me.

Right from the first.

EXCERPT

“You get to travel,” I told him, frustrated. “In a few weeks or a month or whatever you’ll leave this place. You’ll go see things and do things, and for some reason you seem to have enough money to live on without taking a shitty job waiting tables.”

Shade snorted. “Mandy, you don’t wanna know how I get my money.”

“Let me guess—it’s bad?” I asked, rolling my eyes. “I’m starting to think I’m genetically incapable of being attracted to a good guy. No offense.”

“None taken,” he replied, offering a slow smile. “I’m not a good man. But I’m not a man who’ll drag you down into the dirt, either. Or let you get caught up in club business. The Reapers have been around for a long time and we’re real good at taking care of our people. I’m not sayin’ I’ll never need a getaway car, but if I do, I sure as shit won’t trick my woman into driving it.”

God, how was he so sexy when he was saying such terrible things? And that knowing, naughty look in his eyes...it wasn’t fair.

“This is crazy,” I said, trying hard not to smile back at him. “I need to get to work and you need to go do whatever it is that you do that may or may not involve getaway cars"

Shade's Lady (Reapers MC, #6.5)Shade's Lady by Joanna Wylde
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Mandy has terrible luck with men. She literally has no good experience with a man any time in her life. Shade is the president over all the Reapers. He's alpha of course. He's had a thing for Mandy and has just been waiting for an opportunity to pursue it. Mandy secretly has sexy thoughts about him also, but she's afraid of his lifestyle and her track record.

I liked both leads and most of the supporting characters. Nothing feels over the top. I appreciate the way that he's alpha but she isn't a pushover for him. She's trying to make her life better and keep her goals in mind. The ending is nice. It leaves room for more to be told of their story. Anyone who is a fan of this author's books, MC romances or alpha male leads should definitely check out this book.

INSIGHT by SANTINO HASSELL Blog Tour Review

About Insight

Growing up the outcast in an infamous family of psychics, Nate Black never learned how to control his empath abilities. Then after five years without contact, his estranged twin turns up dead in New York City. The claim of suicide doesn’t ring true, especially when a mysterious vision tells Nate it was murder. Now his long-hated gift is his only tool to investigate.

Hitching from his tiny Texas town, Nate is picked up by Trent, a gorgeous engineer who thrives on sarcasm and skepticism. The heat that sparks between them is instant and intense, and Nate ends up trusting Trent with his secrets—something he’s never done before. But once they arrive in the city, the secrets multiply when Nate discovers an underground supernatural community, more missing psychics, and frightening information about his own talent.

Nate is left questioning his connection with Trent. Are their feelings real, or are they being propelled by abilities Nate didn’t realize he had? His fear of his power grows, but Nate must overcome it to find his brother’s killer and trust himself with Trent’s heart.

Insight (The Community, #1)

Nate is part of the old, secretive Black family. They are strange to say the least, and each of them possesses some type of psychic ability. Nate has been told to hide it all his life. He hasn't been guided. He didn't have the easiest childhood and remains an outcast in his town. Relationships are rocky in the Black family so he mostly just keeps to himself. Nate's power is low-level empathy. He can feel all the negativity from everyone with whom he comes into contact. Every vibe he gets is in some way a downer to his system until he meets Trent. Trent is like a light in the dark, sunshine breaking through the rain. Nate feels warmth and calmness coming from Trent and wants to feel more of it. Luckily Trent is drawn to Nate also.

I easily developed affection and understanding for Nate and Trent. Neither personality is overly sweet or alpha. They both are a little standoffish to most of society. I totally get that. Let me just say empath sex is beyond hot. Yes indeed. The suspense and mystery elements are real attention grabbers. I couldn't wait to learn if my guesses were correct, who everyone really was and what actually was happening. I stayed up late into the night reading with this gem. It hooked me in the best way. Insight is a gay paranormal romance, supernatural thriller and murder mystery all rolled into one exceptional novel.
