Sara

Shrill screams echoed throughout our dimly lit bedroom, accelerating my heartbeat and pulling me from the terrible nightmare. I waited for more, until the realization struck. The screams were my own.

“Jacob?” I called, my voice shaking with dread as I reached for my husband. Instead of reassurance, my fingers met cold empty sheets. He was gone—still away at another campus.

What just happened? Was it a dream?

I clung to the covers as I puffed my cheeks and slowly exhaled. While each breath helped to still the chaos, the exercise wasn’t enough.

Who am I? Who is he?

Jacob’s questions from months ago came back. They were my security. They’d worked before.

I am Sara Adams and my husband is Jacob Adams.

Pushing the images from my dream, or nightmare, away, I imagined Jacob’s comforting embrace. Slowly I threw back the down comforter and willed the cool air to soothe my perspiration-drenched skin. From the way my heart galloped in my chest, I might have been running a marathon, not sleeping.

In my sleep I’d been battling to escape a vehicle, and then an explosion of heat.

It had been a dream, I reassured myself—a nightmare. The accident I’d had, nearly nine months before, had been different. I couldn’t remember it, but I’d been told that I’d been injured and gone unconscious. In the nightmare I had been out and away from the wreckage.

I shook my head.

It seemed so real.

In my dream I hadn’t been able to see past the darkness, yet I’d known I wasn’t injured.

My arms surrounded my midsection as the memories replayed like pictures in my mind. Someone was hurting me—purposely harming me, and there was a voice—a deep voice.

Jacob’s voice?

No. He wouldn’t hurt me.

My entire body shuddered as goose bumps peppered my skin. Sitting upright, I reached for the bedside lamp. With trembling fingers I turned the knob and my eyes adjusted as the soft light combined with the sun’s perpetual summer glow.

I closed my eyes and tried to concentrate on Jacob’s questions.

Who am I? Who is he?

This time I said the words aloud, praying that if I spoke the truth, the images would disappear. “I am Sara Adams. He is my husband, Jacob Adams.” I pulled myself from the bed and walked to the bathroom. Turning on the light and the faucet, I cupped the cool water and splashed my face. As I reached for the cup and began to fill it, a metaphoric dam that had been constructed to hold back my past burst.

My mind was flooded—no longer with simple images, but with scene after scene.

For the first time since I could recall, I knew the woman in the mirror.

I knew me.

REVIEW

Away from the Dark (The Light, #2)

4.5 stars

I think this author is trying to kill me slowly. No one can keep me on the edge like she does. You can never take for granted the direction the storyline will go in her novels.

I devoured Into the Light and have been dying for Away from the Dark since the moment I finished ITL. AFTD dives straight into the thick of the struggle. The reader knows things that the characters do not, and even so, you still don't know the solutions. You're just waiting for the rug to be pulled out, for the explosion to happen. I grew to love Sara and Jacob. Their strength and bravery are admirable. Their relationship is made to weather a storm, but they confront wave after wave. So many times I held my breath hoping they would get through a situation or make the right decision. When they came to a crossroads, I flailed about with uncertainty. It's great writing when an author can make a person worry more for characters in a story than real life. This author has a gift for it.

I recommend this book (series actually because book one has to be read first) to anyone who enjoys psychological thrillers and mysteries. I also suggest having a strong drink handy and maybe one of those squishy stress balls for the really intense scenes.

Insidious By Aleatha Romig Review

Dark desires…Deadly secrets…Devious deceptions…Nothing is exactly as it seems in INSIDIOUS, the new erotic thriller from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Aleatha Romig.

When a powerful man is willing to risk everything for his own satisfaction, only one woman can beat him at his own game: his wife. Or so she thinks…

“Let’s start with you calling me Stewart. Formalities seem unnecessary.”

Stewart Harrington is rich, gorgeous, and one of the most powerful men in Miami. He always gets what he wants. Anything is available to him for the right price.

Even me.

Being the wife of a mogul comes with all the perks, but being Mrs. Stewart Harrington comes with a few special requirements. I’ve learned to keep a part of myself locked away as my husband watches me submit to his needs. But the more he demands of me, the more beguiled he becomes and that’s to my advantage. So I keep fulfilling his fantasies and following his rules because he doesn’t know that what he’s playing is really my game. And winning is everything, right?

Insidious is a stand-alone novel and the first Tales from the Dark Side title. Due to the dark and explicit nature of this book, it is recommended for mature audiences only.

EXCERPT

I began to turn toward him, to stop the uneasy feelings his proximity spurred, when he stopped me: his tenor left no room for compromise.

“Don’t turn around.”

Involuntarily, I shuddered at his command.

“Put your hands on the window. Let me see those pretty little fingers.”

I’d never heard a man speak with such unquestioning authority. Obediently, I splayed my fingers on the cool glass before me, thankful I’d left my purse on the sofa. Caging me within his arms, his hands came to rest beside mine. The contrast in size was startling as his deep voice exhaled breathily onto my neck.

His lips brushed my neck. Instead of fighting, I tilted my head back against his chest to give him better access.

Sighing, he moaned. “Damn, girl, you’re sexier up close than I ever imagined. Do you know how hot that answer was?” His fingers that had just painfully twisted my hard nub caressed my same breast. Suddenly, his touch was warm and electric. “You may be frightened, but it’s not of me, it’s of what you’re feeling. Your nipples are telling me you’re feeling the same thing I am. They’re saying that you like this.” With both hands on my breasts, he’d lowered the top of my dress fully exposing me to the window. Thankfully, we were stories above the city. “Do you know how else I know you’re aroused?”

Forming words had become increasingly difficult. Therefore, I shook my head.

“I smell it, and darling, you smell fantastic. I bet you taste fantastic.”

“Because, after I share my beautiful fiancée with the world, I’m going to bring you back here and bury my face in that perfect pussy. The next time you come, it won’t float in a tub. No, darling, it will cover my tongue, my lips, and my chin. I’ll be dripping with your sweet juices.”

Oh, my God!

“And you will not be sighing contently, as you just did. No, you will be calling out—screaming out—my name. Because as of today, that’s your job, to come, to show me how amazingly sexy you are. Because this little orgasm was nothing like what will overtake you when we get home.”

I was shocked and appalled at his candor, and, at the same time, I was freak’n turned on and hot as hell.

REVIEW

Insidious (Tales from the Dark Side, #1)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

For anyone who hasn't read Aleatha Romig before, here's a helpful hint before you start. Anxiety Warning: Medication Required

If you have read her before, you already know that she's the queen of mindfucking plots.

Insidious is about a girl thrown into a world she knows nothing about. She is young and naive and has no idea what her future holds. She continuously finds herself in situations of 'you can't close it once it's been opened.' This leads to sink or swim time, and she's not going down without a fight. Nothing is ever really what it appears to be, including her.

Erotic scenes play a huge part. Some are dark; some are business; some are pleasure. Scandals are lurking behind each act. Every character has their own agenda. Contracts control some. Murders end some. It's the type of book that you have to pay attention to what you're reading. Certain parts may even require a reread in order to digest this pretzel of a storyline. It's difficult for me to explain the levels of twists and turns without giving away too much, and I recommend going into it without knowing anything beforehand. Just understand that the moral for every character in the book is trust no one.
