The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger Review

Audrey Niffenegger's dazzling debut is the story of Clare, a beautiful, strong-minded art student, and Henry, an adventuresome librarian, who have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six, and were married when Clare was twenty-three and Henry thirty-one. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: his genetic clock randomly resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous and unpredictable, and lend a spectacular urgency to Clare and Henry's unconventional love story. That their attempt to live normal lives together is threatened by something they can neither prevent nor control makes their story intensely moving and entirely unforgettable.

REVIEW

The Time Traveler's Wife

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I read hundreds of books a year, but I will never forget this one. There's romance, and then there's epic romance. The Time Traveler's Wife is definitely an epic romance.

Henry is a time traveler. He has no control over when or where it will happen. Sometimes something lovely happens. Other times it's horrible. When Henry time travels, nothing material goes with him. He shows up with just his body. He meets Clare one day when he is a man, and she is a little girl. This starts a tradition of him coming to their spot where clothes are waiting for him. She also feeds him, and they share many talks and experiences. When he comes to her, he is leaving the grown up Clare, his wife. He is jerked in and out of different times his entire life, never knowing what conditions he's entering.

This is one of my favorite novels ever, and it wrecked me, touching me so deeply. I cried while reading it and continued to cry after, not just a few tears, but streaming tears with gasps and whimpers. I broke down several times while out in public. I can't move on from it to pick up another book, biggest hangover ever. I feel like I will never get over it.

The storyline is told in flashes of present and past tense for both characters. Sometimes they haven't met yet. Sometimes they're young and others old. It's a very twisted web, but it all connects beautifully. Most parts start off telling the ages of the characters so the reader will know which version of the cast we are getting. Occasionally bits learned in one meeting come to light in another. The details are important.

The love and sacrifice between Henry and Clare is indescribable. And my love for this book is boundless. I highly recommend it. P.S. I have not watched the movie, but I've heard it's very different, so if the movie didn't sweep you off your feet, you may still fall for the novel.

Reggie Callahan has come to terms with her prognosis of less than a year to live. She’s been dealing with it all summer thanks to blacking out and falling off her horse back home in Wisconsin. Instead of starting her junior year, she’s only back at New York University to tie up loose ends. One of them is breaking the news to her childhood friend, actress and model, Desi St. Clair. For Reggie, telling her that she is sick, and leaving the city is harder than learning you’re going to die.

REVIEW

My Last Season With You

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I always say that I read every type and genre of book, but I honestly wasn't pumped about a F/F story. I cannot express enough how pleasantly surprised I was by this story. It is complete romance.

Reggie and Desi have been best friends since they were little. Reggie always knew she loved Desi more than just as a friend, but she never wanted to rock the boat and chance loosing the most important person in her life. When Reggie finds out that she's dying, it puts life's priorities into focus for both girls. They find out they both have been having the same feelings and have wasted so much time ignoring it.
When you're packing up your life with the possibility of no longer living, what do you fill your suitcase with?

This book is from Reggie's point of view. It follows the ups and downs of her treatments and the budding romance between the girls over several months. My Last Season With You is a beautiful story of true love and life lessons.
"Regina, don't wait. Life is not practice for the real thing; it IS the real thing. We can't wait for the next test result, we can't wait for the next treatment; we can't wait for the next next. Go ahead and give yourself permission to own the moment. Moments are ours for the taking, and we have to grab it whoever we can."

If your looking for a touching, honest, moving book, this is probably for you. There will be tears.

4—4.5 stars

A Walk Through Fire by Felice Stevens Blog Tour Review

Title: A Walk Through Fire
Author: Felice Stevens
Genre: Adult, Gay Romance
Publish Date: November 25, 2014

Years after running away from an abusive foster family, Asher Davis still inwardly struggles with the guilt of leaving his foster brothers behind. He’s climbed to unimaginable heights as a ruthless, high-powered attorney, creating a life of power and control. He takes whatever and whoever he wants.

Blaming himself for the death of his parents, Dr. Drew Klein retreats into a shell of loneliness, merely going through the motions of life. After a disastrous, short-lived marriage, Drew decides to leave his lucrative medical practice to set up a clinic for abused young men and women. The decision has more repercussions than Drew could ever imagine when the dark and sensual Ash Davis volunteers to help.

Although Drew isn’t gay, Ash is inexplicably drawn to him. He vows to simply bed him and forget him like he's done with every other man. However, Drew's sweet and caring nature and unexpected passion stun and frighten Ash, who questions his right to any happiness at all. And when Ash befriends an abused young man who unwittingly draws the clinic into danger, threatening Drew’s safety and that of his beloved grandmother, Ash discovers that there is nothing he won’t sacrifice to protect the love he never thought he’d find.

“Have a drink, Drew, and tell me why you’re here.” Ash sipped his vodka and stared at him over the rim of his glass.
“No, thanks, I’m driving. But I do want to talk to you.” The man was a study in contrasts. Drew couldn’t think of a time he hadn’t seen Ash perfectly dressed, every hair in place, looking like he’d stepped out of a men’s fashion magazine.
Tonight however…well he looked off-kilter. Though he still had on his clothes from earlier, that white button down shirt and black slacks, the shirt was wrinkled and unbuttoned lower than he’d ever seen. Dark stubble shadowed along his jaw, and his hair lay unkempt and disheveled. Drew shifted on the sofa. “Look, I know this may sound stupid, but my grandmother was concerned about you, so she asked me to stop by and check up on you.”
“And of course you do everything your nana says.”
Drew’s face flamed. “Fuck you, Davis.”
A tiny smirk hit the corner of Ash’s lips. “What’s the matter, Doc? The truth hurts?”
The bastard. After all the nice things his grandmother had said about him, how she’d worried about him, this was his response? To act like the snide sarcastic son of a bitch he was at their first meeting? How dare he treat her concern as if it were nothing? And to think he’d actually thought they were friends. “What the hell do you know about the truth, huh? No one knows anything about you; you have no friends, no lover.” He stood, ready to leave. “No wonder you’re all alone. No one cares about you. You aren’t worth it.” Shit, he’d never spoken so cruelly to anyone. But then again, no one had ever gotten under his skin like Ash Davis.
Like a snake uncoiled, Ash jumped off the sofa and grabbed him by the shoulder. “Take that back.”
“What’s the matter, Davis? The truth hurts?” He mimicked Ash’s earlier words to him, and saw a flare of anger gleam in those colorless, glittering eyes.
“You fucking bastard. Who are you to say I’m not worth it, that no one cares about me? I have friends. People like me. Don’t you ever say I’m not worth it. I matter goddamn you. I fucking matter.”
Ash tried to grab onto him, but Drew wrenched away and took off for the door, speaking over his shoulder.
“People don’t like you, Ash, they want to fuck you because you’re beautiful. That’s not liking. That’s not a friendship. How many relationships have you ever had with another man? You’ve never even had a boyfriend or a permanent relationship have you, because you have to have a heart. You have to care about someone. How can you value someone else in your life when you don’t even value yourself?”

I have always been a romantic at heart. I believe that while life is tough, there is always a happy ending just around the corner. I started reading traditional historical romances when I was a teenager, then life and law school got in the way. It wasn’t until I picked up a copy of Bertrice Small and became swept away to Queen Elizabeth’s court that my interest in romance novels became renewed.

But somewhere along the way, my tastes shifted. While I still enjoys a juicy Historical romance, I began experimenting with newer, more cutting edge genres and discovered the world of Male/Male romance. Once I picked up her first, I became so enamored of the authors, the character-driven stories and the overwhelming emotion of the books, I knew I wanted to write my own.

I live in New York City with my husband and two children and hopefully soon a cat of my own. My day begins with a lot of caffeine and ends with a glass or two of red wine. I practice law but daydream of a time when I can sit by a beach somewhere and write beautiful stories of men falling in love. Although there is bound to be angst along the way, a Happily Ever After is always guaranteed.

A Walk Through FireA Walk Through Fire by Felice Stevens
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This story centers around kids going through hardships. The main characters are putting together a place for kids to go for help. Also they themselves have painful pasts. There are some true lessons the characters must learn.
"The first thing you have to learn is to love yourself and believe you're worthy to receive love. Only then can you have a healthy relationship with another person."

Asher and Drew, the main couple of the story, are somewhat lost in life. Both are extremely successful in their careers. One is a lawyer and the other a doctor, both are one of the best in their field. Another thing they have in common is that they are terrible in the area of relationships. Asher's past has left him so untrusting that he cannot even attempt to have one. He relies on quick, dark corner hook-ups with strangers. Drew has no spark, just goes with the flow. When the two meet, so many unrecognized emotions rush to the surface.
And when Ash smiled, Drew knew right the, his heart would be broken if this man left him in the end.

My overall option is that is this a good story. I liked it.
I didn't understand a lot that went on with Stevie, one of the kids they were trying to help. The way things were handled with him did not seem realistic. I felt discconected with some parts of the story because of that.
I loved when they opened up and told each other their histories. Asher is such a strong character. I appreciated all he has overcome. This part really pulled me in.
Toward the end, something very emotional happened. I did have tears.

I found it to be a sweet, sexy, thought-provoking story.
"Maybe you needed that mistake to lead you in the direction you were always meant to be."

Let Love Live by Melissa Collins Review

Let Love Live
By
Melissa Collins

SYNOPSIS

Who would you become if you lost the only person who ever mattered?

For twenty-six year old Dylan Hopkins, the answer is easy. He’s become no one. Memories of the happier times are all he has left as he finds himself meandering numbly through his now dull life. Though he cares about his work and family dearly, he’s yet to let himself find love again. Afraid of letting go of what he once had, Dylan chooses to keep his heart buried, where it belongs, having died a long time ago.

Conner Michelson is about to change everything Dylan knows. He’s every bit the bad boy persona - tatted up, ex-MMA fighter, but after an injury leaves him unable to fight, he has to rethink his goals. Having just opened his own gym, Conner can cross his first major life accomplishment off his very short list. Next up: find a man he can settle down with and build a family. Seems simple enough - a dream most people have, but when he meets Dylan, his carefree, easy-going life is thrown into a tailspin.

Determined to keep Dylan in his life, Conner vows to resurrect Dylan's long ago buried heart and let love live once more.

  • ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Melissa Collins has always been a book worm. Studying Literature in college ensured that her nose was always stuck in a book. She followed her passion for reading to the most logical career choice: English teacher. Her hope was to share her passion for reading and the escapism of books to her students. Having spent more than a decade in front of a classroom, she can easily say that it’s been a dream.

Her passion for writing didn’t start until more recently. When she was home on maternity leave in early 2012, she read her first romance novel and her head filled with the passion, angst and laughter of the characters who she read about it. It wasn’t long before characters of her own took shape in her mind. Their lives took over Melissa’s brain and The Love Series was born.

    REVIEW

    Let Love Live (Love, #5)

This book is divided into two parts.

Both are amazing, but it's part one that really got to me. Lawd! I bawled and bawled, like I could not see my kindle screen for the tears at some point. It was beautiful and tragic and all the things I love about a great pull my heartstrings story.

It made me wish I could protect this beautiful love from the cruel reality that is the world sometimes.
"Dylan, I'm sorry I couldn't be everything you needed, everything you deserved. I love you. I always will. I'm sorry."

So I did the only thing I could think of. I got in my car and drove.

Part two lightens the mood without letting go of the heartstrings.
"What are you my gay wingman?"
It's about second chances at happiness in life, picking up the pieces.

This is a story of heartbreak and coming back from it. It's also a story of how much impact people have on each other's lives. I highly recommend reading it.
